THE ECONOMY,SMALL BUSINESS,ADVERTISING & PHOTOGRAPHY

A few personal thoughts after the last three years of economic crisis when small businesses have suffered financially.

What have they cut back on to survive?Staff, brutal layoffs! And next ADVERTISING.The result: people out of work, loss of revenue by small business because of lack of visibility in the market place. The ultimate success of any business or endevour depends on potential buyers or clients actually seenig or being informedof the existence of that business.

I have noticed over the last year that my own efforts to promote my photography businesshave started to pay off.

The majority of my clients find me through the internet search engines. The aim of any promotional website is to achieve a top 10 page rank for particular search keywords. But how to achieve this position without spending thousands of dollars with an SEO Company.

My initial answer was Google AdWords.I immediatelly started to get responses. However, AdWords still cost over $200.00 per month.

I then started to work on my website. I began to understand how to structure the source code so search engines would list me ,at least, on the first or top of the 2nd. page search.

When I started to get the search results that I needed I was able to drop AdWords and save that monthly fee.

In this technological age, where most small business seems driven through the internet or TV,an ineresting thing happened to mt photography business.Over the many years I have worked as a photographer,I had always been known as a people ,celebrity and lifestyle photographer.I suddenly found that I was getting calls to shoot product (which had been a small part of my business).I guess that as a fledgling photographer with Vogue Magazine I was required to learn all types of lighting, from fashion to beauty to sets to product.

The lesson I have learned lately is that if you wnt to be seen in the market place you must promote yourself or your business. So, bite the bullet, set aside a little money and use it to promote and advertise.

The results may surprise you!

About Me

I began my career at Vogue in England and went on to work for and with such masters as Helmut Newton, David Bailey and Richard Avedon before arriving in the United States. Since then I have been on the Hollywood/Los Angeles scene shooting celebrities, models and advertising. Highlights include more than 10 years as the only freelance photographer allowed regular access on set to the hit ABC TV show “Baywatch” starring Pamela Anderson, the first promotional/marketing session with internationally recognized activist Erin Brokovich plus book cover art of Oscar winner Michael Caine’s best selling biography. Each year many of the rich and famous pass through my Los Angeles studio and recently among them was one of my all time favorite actresses Nicolette Sheridan (one of her head shots can be seen on my home page). Her session received rave reviews from all concerned and I consider it among the best I have ever done.
